矢研の滝
Yatogi Falls (Yatogi-no-Taki)

Impressive power! A famous cascade with majesty and grandeur

The lush natural world of Mount Osuzu stretches out north-south on the western side of Tsuno Town. Osuzu Camp Site lies in the midst of this, and you can reach the Yatogi Falls in around 30 minutes’ walk from here.
The falls were selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls thanks to their extraordinary volume of water, which flows down the rock surface with a roar from around 73 meters up.
It’s not just the Yatogi Falls—Mount Osuzu is dotted with more than 30 different waterfalls, large and small, including the Shirataki Falls. It’s been designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty as the “Mount Osuzu waterfall group.” The name “Yatogi” is said to be derived from a legend in which Emperor Jimmu, the fabled first emperor of Japan, used water from these falls to sharpen (“togi”) spears and arrows (“ya”) on the occasion of an expedition to the east.
There are three trekking routes—listen to the refreshing murmur of the waterfalls and clear streams and find solace in a space filled with negative ions. You can see various plants in each season, including rhododendrons and akebono azalea. Enjoy trekking with the new greenery in the summer or the bright leaves in the fall.
