都農神社
Tsuno Shrine
A high-ranking shrine where Emperor Jimmu is said to have prayed for peace in the country and continued fortune in war
Tsuno Shrine was the ichinomiya, or highest ranked shrine, of Hyuga Province. It is a celebrated power spot: its vast grounds are surrounded by a shrine grove and are filled with a mysterious and solemn atmosphere. This shrine was founded six years before the fabled Emperor Jimmu was enthroned as the first emperor of Japan. It is said that when the capital was moved east, he prayed to the deity enshrined here for peace in the country, calm seas, and continued fortune in war. Onamuchi-no-Mikoto (also known as Okuninushi-no-Kami), the deity of this shrine, is a god of recovery from illness, marriage, prosperity of descendants, and flourishing business. Tsuno Shrine’s grounds contain plenty of things to appreciate, including the use of “kami no ishi” (“god’s stones”) to worship (offer one of these stones with your wish and it will be fulfilled), a “nade Daikoku” statue that brings all kinds of luck when stroked, and a small “nade usagi” (petting rabbit) statue that is said to bless you with good health.
Although Tsuno Shrine was the ichinomiya of Hyuga Province, it was burned down during the conflict between the Otomo and Shimazu families in the 16th century. It's said the shrine was restored in 1692 by Akizuki Tanemasa, the lord of Akizuki domain. The current shrine building was built in 2007, as the previous one had deteriorated due to its age.
