舞鶴公園
Maizuru Park

A restful location in Takanabe, a “castle town of history and cultural education”

The topography of Takanabe Castle resembled a crane flapping its wings, so it was also known as “Maizuru” (“Dancing Crane”) Castle. During the Edo period (1603–1868), this was the seat of the Akizuki family, lords of Takanabe Domain, but it is now maintained as a park containing historic sites.
Takanabe Town’s History Museum, which stands in the park, collects and exhibits cultural properties such as the red seal of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the framed text “Meirondo” (明倫堂) that hung above the domain school, as well as folk and historic materials. This is also the location of the “Banzaitei Hanare,” a reconstruction of the residence of Tanetatsu, the 11th head of the Akizuki family, where you can see a simple yet beautiful garden and a suikinkutsu (a type of garden ornament and music device).

Maizuru Park is famous for its spring cherry blossoms, with around 1,000 blooming Yoshino cherry trees. A cherry blossom festival is held from the end of March, and people visit to view flowers such as azaleas until the start of summer.
The Takanabe Lantern Festival, held in mid-October, is the town’s representative event. The lights from around 10,000 lanterns—both stone and paper—shine and create a fantastical atmosphere as far as the eye can see. The park bustles with large numbers of people at stage events such as dances and taiko drum performances as well as a product fair.
