阿波岐原森林公園 市民の森
Awakigahara Forest Park Shimin-no-mori

A vast park where you can enjoy seasonal flowers

This vast forest park stretches around 10 kilometers north-south.
Approximately 30 hectares of the park are maintained as a citizens’ forest (shimin-no-mori), with rest spots, flower beds, walking trails, viewing platforms, a play area, a shop, and more.
You can borrow a rental bicycle to use in the forest park free of charge (you will need to complete procedures in the management office).
The iris garden, where around 200,000 plants of 160 species grow, holds an “Iris Festival” each year from late May to early June when the flowers are in bloom.
During this period, the garden hosts various events, including open air tea ceremonies and koto performances. Irises are the flowers of Miyazaki City.

● Seasonal flowers
Late January to mid-February: Plum trees (approx. 160 trees)
Late May to mid-June: Irises (approx. 200,000 plants)
Early June to mid-June: Hydrangeas (approx. 1,000 plants)
Mid-January to March: Camellias (approx. 340 plants)

●Spiritual spots
The forest park contains Misogi Pond, the spot where, legend has it, the god Izanagi-no-Mikoto performed “misogi” (purification by water). On the southern side of the forest, you’ll find Eda Shrine, which was recorded in the Engishiki (rules and regulations concerning ceremonies) of the Heian period (794–1185).

Large numbers of people have visited these as spiritual spots in recent years, and on weekends you can listen to explanations from volunteer tourist guides.
