【~12/7】水郷延岡 鮎やな
[until December 7] Suigo Nobeoka Ayu-yana
[Only Yes in certain seasons] A traditional fishing technique that has been used for more than 300 years
Suigo Nobeoka, meaning “river district Nobeoka,” contains several large rivers: the Gokase River, Ose River, Houri River, and the Kitagawa River. And the thing that evokes autumn in Suigo Nobeoka are the ayu fish weirs (yana) constructed across the Gokase River.
This is a traditional fishing method that has been used for more than 300 years, starting in the Edo period (1603–1868), and the weirs are made each year from late October to the start of December.
Yana fishing makes use of the ayus’ inherent trait of swimming downriver to spawn—this traditional fishing method involves damming the river but leaving parts open as outlets for the water, enticing the fish to bamboo grates called “otesu.”
Ayu-yana fishing is seen across Japan, but it’s extremely unusual to build these weirs in places where the river is more than 100 meters wide, especially close to a built-up area, and Nobeoka boasts this fishing on the grandest scale in the country.
Jetties are also built to enable people to observe the ayu-yana from nearby, so make sure you get a close-up look at the mechanism carefully assembled to withstand the flow of the river. You’ll no doubt feel the comfortable breeze from the clear stream and find yourself feeling refreshed.
On top of this, “ayu-yaki,” a specialty of the Gokase River where ayu are cooked on the river banks, has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 aromascapes chosen by the Ministry of the Environment as Japanese landscapes to be preserved. The Gokase River has been selected for 12 years straight (since 2013) as a river with the highest water quality, making the natural ayu living in Nobeoka superb.
When the ayu-yana are being constructed each year, Nobeoka, a “treasure trove of ayu,” opens ayu-yana eating areas where you can savor ayu cuisine made from weir-caught ayu cooked with salt or miso on the spot.
