Mount Mukabaki/Mukabaki Falls
A popular mountain-climbing location where you can also enjoy the famous cascade of one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls
The magnificent Mount Mukabaki boasts towering cliffs of strangely shaped rocks. This mountain, standing 831 meters high, is made up of two rocky peaks known as Odake and Medake, and is said to have received its name due to its resemblance when seen from afar to “mukabaki,” chaps worn when hunting or horse riding. It is covered in virgin forest, and showcases the beauty of the four seasons with azaleas in the spring, bamboo lilies in mid-May, and bright leaves in the fall. It has been designated a place of scenic beauty in Miyazaki Prefecture.
Paths run up Mount Mukabaki, and it is well-loved locally as a mountain to climb on an excursion—it's a popular hiking spot among families, too. It takes around two hours to reach the peak, from which you can enjoy vast 360-degree views of the mountains in the center of Kyushu, as far as the Hyuga-nada sea. The sights from the sheer cliffs at the summit are spectacular enough that you won’t want to look away, and will blow away the tiredness of the climb.
Between Odake Peak and Medake Peak are the Mukabaki Falls, a famous cascade selected as one of Japan’s 100 best waterfalls. They’re also known as the Yahazu Falls. At 20 meters wide, with a drop of 77 meters, the water cascading down the sheer cliffs is a magnificent sight. You can get very near to the waterfall basin, so why not feel the powerful spray of this fall of overwhelming height from close up?
Local legend has it that Yamato-Takeru-no-Mikoto, who came to Hyuga to conquer the Kumaso (an ancient people resident in southern Kyushu), saw this mountain and gave it the name “Mukabaki,” and named the fall “Yahazu,” meaning “arrow nock.” His verse—Nunobiki no yahazu no taki wo itemireba, kawakami takeru ochite nagaruru ("If I shoot the Yahazu Fall that stretches like a cloth, Kawakami Takeru (the Kumaso leader) upstream will fall and flow away”)—is still recited as part of the ritual kagura dances of the Nobeoka area.
