荒立神社
Aratate Shrine
A famous power spot, dedicated to the deities of marriage and performing arts
This shrine stands quietly in a forest with rows of cedar trees. It's said to bless worshippers with marital happiness and luck in love, and legend has it that this is the place where Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto (who guided the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu-Omikami on his descent to earth) and Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto (who danced joyfully in front of the door of the heavenly rock cave where Amaterasu-Omikami hid, bringing her out and restoring light to the world) were married and lived together. The couple were said to have used rough wood (ara-ki) to quickly build (tate) their shrine, and so it became known as “Aratate Miya.” Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto is famous as a goddess of song, dance, and the performing arts, so this is a popular spot secretly visited by many performers.
The Prayer Hall is decorated with pictures expressing the descent of the grandson of the sun goddess to earth and the legend of the heavenly rock cave. The shrine’s grounds contain the “lucky seven virtue blocks” (shichifuku tokuju bangi), said to grant seven wishes when struck seven times, along with other virtue blocks such as those for happiness in the future (mirai bangi), prosperity in the performing arts, (geido shinei bangi) and the 12-year zodiac (eto bangi). Why not take a walk through the forest, filled with a mysterious power, and try striking the blocks for yourself?
