南郷温泉 どんタロの湯(南郷温泉 山霧)
Nango Onsen Dontaro-no-yu (Nango Onsen Yamagiri)
The most popular hot spring facility in the prefecture, boasting outstanding water quality
Nango Onsen is said to be a gift from the ancient Kudara no Konikishi clan (from Baekje on the Korean Peninsula). In 1996, a hot spring from 1,500 meters underground suddenly appeared on the mountain behind Mikado Shrine, which venerates King Teika of Baekje. It has soothed the minds and bodies of the people of Misato Town ever since.
The good-quality spring waters are famous as some of Japan’s best for beautifying the skin—a soak in the slippery waters will leave your skin smooth and silky. From the open air bath, continually fed by the spring, you can look out on picturesque mountain scenery, and gaze at a sky full of stars at night.
The facility includes a reception hall where you can take a break free of charge, to loosen up and relax. The popular restaurant menu includes stone-cooked bibimbap! The shop sells local products as souvenirs and drinks; of these, people also recommend the “Dontaro Brand” additive-free cosmetics, made from the hot spring waters.
Nearby spots include the Nishi no Shosoin and Kudara no Yakata, as well as Koibito no Oka (Lovers’ Hill), so why not combine your visit here with some sightseeing?
