Kirishima Mine Shrine
A historic shrine that honors two of the Kirishima Rokusha Gongen in one place
This ancient, high-status shrine venerates six deities: the three gods known as “three generations of Himuka” (Hyuga), referring to Ninigo-no-Mikoto (the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu-Omikami) and his son and grandson, and their wives. It was constructed part-way up Mount Takachihonomine, but the shrine building repeatedly burned down due to the frequent volcanic activity of Mount Kirishima. It was relocated and rebuilt each time.
In 1874, it was merged with Hinamori Shrine, another of the Kirishima Rokusha Gongen (the main six shrines in the area). At this time, it was relocated to the site where Hinamori Shrine had stood, where it remains to this day. The word “Hinamori“ can be written with the characters “夷守,” meaning “protection from barbarians,” or “雛守,” meaning “child protector,” and this shrine is said to guard women and children; it is well-known as a deity of marriage. This site, housing the seals of both Kirishima Mine Shrine and Hinamori Shrine, is also popular as a power spot.
In 2020, the unryu (dragon) pillars in Kirishima Mine Shrine's prayer hall were designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Kobayashi City. The powerful figures of two dragons are wrapped around the pillars, which feature exquisite carvings.
