Mount Karakuni
A famous peak of the Kirishima Mountains, with sweeping panoramic views of Kirishima’s peaks and Mount Sakurajima
Note: Due to volcanic activity on Mount Kirishima (Shinmoedake, Mount Iwo), access to some of the roads and mountain trails in the area around the mountains is currently prohibited. Check the latest information in advance.
Mount Karakuni, standing 1,700 meters tall, is the highest peak of the Kirishima Mountains. It towers to the southeast of Ebino Plateau, with a huge crater 900 meters in diameter and 300 meters deep.
To the southwest, you’ll find Onamiike Crater Lake, which is 630 meters in diameter and the highest volcanic lake in Japan. This crater lake is a stunning cobalt-blue, and the landscape it creates with the broadleaf trees is a must-see.
The mountain peak offers a sweeping panorama of the peaks of Kirishima, Onamiike Crater Lake, Mount Sakurajima, and Mount Kaimon. On fine days, the view is so good you can almost see as far away as Korea, which is where the mountain is said to get its name (“Karakuni” is written with the same characters as “Korea,” “韓国”). From Ebino Plateau, you can look out at the massive form of the mountain, standing strong with a mortar-like shape. The crumbling rock cliffs formed from crater explosions tell the tale of its wildness.
Mount Karakuni is a treasure trove of living things, with various types of alpine plants as well as wild birds and insects, making it a very popular spot for trekking! During the early summer, the Rhododendron kiusianum on the hiking route bloom with pretty pink flowers, and you can enjoy the songs of the many wild birds.
At the foot of the mountain lies a plain called Susukigahara, where you can see a fall landscape covered by Chinese silver grass with shrimp-red tips as far as the eye can see.
This spectacle is said to be the reason for the name “Ebino” (meaning “of shrimp”), and is one of the sights that symbolizes Ebino Plateau.
