Lake Miike

A spot with stunning views of Mount Takachihonomine, and a paradise of wild birds

This lake lies between Miyakonojo City and Takaharu Town in a corner of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, Japan’s first national park. With a circumference of 4.3 kilometers and maximum depth of 103 meters, it is said to be the deepest volcanic lake in Japan.
Lake Miike is surrounded by virgin forest, and the “Miike Wild Birds’ Forest” has maintained a particularly lush natural environment, even within the national park. It’s home to wild birds such as fairy pittas, mandarin ducks, and copper pheasants, as well as many fish, including rainbow trout, Japanese smelt, and koi carp. The area has walking paths and observation huts, so you can watch a variety of living creatures.
Early in the morning on a fine day, Mount Takachihonomine, the main peak of the Kirishima Mountains, is reflected on the glittering lake surface, creating a fantastic spot for photos!

The lake also offers plenty of water-based activities such as SUP, kayaking, and pedal boats. You’ll see large numbers of people with their families having fun as they camp, fish, and climb the mountain. Why not fully experience the real thrill of having a good time close to nature for yourself?
