Kirishimahigashi Jinja Shrine

A solemn shrine whose grounds include the sacred Mount Takachihonomine

Kirishimahigashi Jinja Shrine overlooks Lake Miike and the eastern mountainside of Mount Takachihonomine, a sacred peak of the Kirishima Mountains. Its grounds in the forest are filled with a tranquil, dignified atmosphere, and are somehow full of a mysterious power. This shrine is one of the Kirishima Rokusha Gongen, the main six shrines in the area, and is known as the “Kirishima-gu of the East” while Kirishima-jingu Shrine in Kagoshima Prefecture is the “Kirishima-gu of the West.”
It is said to have been founded during the time of the 10th emperor of Japan, Emperor Sujin, and worships Izanaki-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto as its enshrined deities. The peak of Mount Takachihonomine falls within Kirishimahigashi Jinja‘s grounds, and the Amanosakahoko, a bronze spear that legend says was thrust into the ground here by Ninigi-no-mikoto, grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu-Omikami, is the shrine’s treasure.
The Haraigawa Kagura is a ritual dance performed only by shrine parishioners, and this, together with the Sano Kagura passed down in Takaharu Town, has been designated a national Important Intangible Cultural Property as the “Kanme (Divine Dances) of Takaharu.” It’s famous for its “juninin tsurugi” (“12 person sword dance”), bravely performed with real swords. The Haraigawa Kagura is danced throughout the night from the second Saturday of December to the following day each year.
