Inyoseki Rocks
A rare landscape formed by nature
Note: Please be aware that the observation platform has been damaged by a typhoon, and is inaccessible to visitors. It is still possible to view the rocks from a short distance away.
The Inyoseki rocks (literally “yin-yang rocks”) are two strangely shaped rocks located in the lower part of Sannomiya Gorge, known as “husband and wife rocks.” Their natural forms were created from lava from the Kirishima volcanic belt, and they are truly a remarkable sight. The “male” (yang) rock stands 17.5 meters high, while the “female” (yin) rock has a 5.5-meter circumference; it’s globally rare to have a pair of male-female rocks in the same place. The Inyoseki rocks have been worshipped as deities of children and all kinds of production since ancient times.
Legend has it that a dragon ascending to the heavens was charmed by a beautiful woman and descended, turning to stone. Because of this, they are also known as the “dragon rocks.”
Ujo Noguchi, a poet of the Meiji period (1868–1912), wrote a verse about them: “Hama no segawa ni wa futatsu no kiseki, hito nya iu na yo, kataru na yo” ("In the shallow currents of the riverside are two strange rocks, don't say anything, don’t tell anyone").
The Kobayashi Inyo-seki Festival is held in September each year. It includes a sports competition, a fun lottery, and traditional local performing arts such as taiko drum dances.
