A prefectural Natural Monument: a weeping cherry tree more than 300 years old

This ancient temple is said to have been founded in 1615, more than 400 years ago.
In its grounds stands a weeping cherry tree around 300 years old with magnificent spreading branches. It’s said that during the Edo period (1603–1868), the chief priest of the time brought back this tree as a sapling on his return from a visit to the Hongwanji Temples in Kyoto, and it has been designated a Natural Monument of Miyazaki Prefecture.
Its pink flowers bloom each year at the end of March and the beginning of April, fascinating visitors. Some people capture it in a photo with the temple’s towering three-story pagoda in the background. The tree is illuminated during blossom season, and large numbers of flower-viewing visitors come from far away to see it.
Around 300 trees said to be the “children” and “grandchildren” of this cherry tree are planted within Gokase Town. We recommend that you see them too on your visit.
In the fall, the temple grounds hold beautiful autumn leaves, and in winter you can see snowscapes quietly building up.
