Ajisai Park is an extensive 6.9 hectares, lying on the top of a small hill approximately 5 minutes’ drive from JR Yamanokuchi Station.
“Ajisai Park” literally means “hydrangea park,” and, just as its name suggests, you’ll find 28,000 hydrangea plants of 84 varieties growing here, carpeting the slopes. The best time to drop by is early to mid-June, when the multicolored hydrangea flowers are at their peak, soothing the hearts of the people who visit. The feeling they create can even blow away the melancholy mood of the rainy season. The park shop, which is only open when the hydrangea are in bloom, sells local specialty products. Take a break from walking around and treat yourself to an ice cream, a drink, or a bento lunch box. We also recommend their brightly colored hydrangea dessert, only Yes for a limited time.

In addition to its hydrangeas, the park also boasts beautiful cherry blossoms, irises, and bright fall leaves, making it a place of rest where you can spend time as you please, walking around and taking in the natural world of the four seasons.

On the top of the 210-meter-high hill, a 15-meter-high observatory in the shape of a castle has been built on the remains of Matsuo Castle—from here, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Miyakonojo Basin, with the Kirishima Mountains in the distance.
