Amagajo Park
A park with a lawn area and sports facilities, where you can learn about history and enjoy flower-viewing
Amagajo Park lies at an elevation of 120 meters, and includes a lawn area, baseball pitch and gymnasium, and the Amagajo History and Folklore Museum.
In spring, around 1,200 Yoshino and yamazakura cherry trees and approximately 50,000 azalea bloom here, making it famous as one of the leading flower-viewing spots in Miyazaki City.
The Amagajo Kaimon Sakura Festival takes place here each year in mid or late March, making the park bustle with stage shows and stalls. The cherry blossoms are illuminated for two weeks or so at the end of March, so you can enjoy the fantastical appearance of the flowers.
Amagajo was a castle constructed in 1600 by Shimazu Yoshihiro, the 17th head of the Shimazu family of Satsuma domain, to defend against the Ito family of Hyuga. The Amagajo History and Folklore Museum within the park tells the story of the history of Takaoka.
