御崎神社
Misaki-jinja Shrine
A shrine standing high on a cliff, guarding people’s safety at sea
This shrine stands on the tip of Cape Toi, protruding around 6 km to the south, halfway up a precipitous cliff. The azure of the Pacific Ocean spreads before your eyes as you take in the natural beauty created from the interweaving of the marine blue and white waves.
It’s said that Misaki-jinja Shrine was established in 708, more than 1,300 years ago. It worships Wadatsumi-no-Kami, the god of the sea, who has long received the devout trust of people who fish and work in marine transport as a deity for safe voyages.
There’s a native sago palm forest in the area, and the sight of their thriving evergreen leaves evokes the mood of warm southern countries! Cape Toi’s native habitat is at the northern limit for sago palms, which are mainly distributed in southeast Asia and Taiwan, so to have around 3,000 of them flourishing here is an impressive spectacle. They’re also very valuable from an academic perspective, and have been designated a National Special Natural Monument as the “Cape Toi Sago Palm Natural Habitat.”
The shrine is not normally staffed, but omamori (protective charms) and goshuin shrine stamps are sold in the shrine office during the New Year (January 1–3). It is also well-known as a place to admire the beautiful first sunrise of the year.
