Night Trekking Adventure ! Embark on a Journey to Connect with Nature in Ebino

When people think of Miyazaki, they often picture its warm climate and stunning coastline. However, the region’s mountainous landscapes are just as breathtaking. This time, we are introducing Ebino-dake, a remarkable peak in Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture.

Ebino-dake is part of the Kirishima Mountain Range, standing 1,236 meters above sea level in central Miyazaki. Surrounded by lush nature, it offers a perfect escape for forest bathing and enjoying the crisp highland air. During winter, a snow-covered landscape transforms the area, creating a mystical scene that challenges the image of Miyazaki as a tropical destination. In addition to daytime trekking, visitors can experience the thrill of night trekking, where they can immerse themselves in the serene mountain atmosphere, listen to the whispers of nature, and witness the nocturnal wildlife in action.

This time, we’ll take you on an unforgettable night trekking adventure to fully experience the beauty of Miyazaki’s mountains.

Trekking Begins!
The meeting point is "Ashiyu-no-Eki Ebino Kogen" (Ebino Kogen Footbath Station).
After equipping headlamps, checking emergency gear, and warming up, the adventure begins!

The trek starts on a paved trail, surrounded by towering red pine trees.

As we walk, Shunsuke shares an intriguing fact:
"Red pines are strong and thrive in harsh environments. They often grow where lava once flowed. If a volcanic eruption occurs, it’s said that escaping to areas without red pines may be safer."

This trekking experience offers more than just breathtaking scenery—it’s a journey through time, revealing the geological and ecological history of the land.

As we reach the hiking trail, we carefully navigate the rugged path.

It’s January, and snow still covers the mountain.

The silence is mesmerizing—only the crunch of leaves, the whispering wind, and the distant sounds of wildlife accompany our steps.

Our headlamps illuminate footprints left by nocturnal animals on the sparkling snow.

If you're lucky, you might spot a deer or other nocturnal creatures.

Their glowing eyes peer curiously at us, reminding us of our deep connection with nature.

The guide does more than just lead the way. They deeply convey the cycles of nature and how humans coexist with the plants and animals that inhabit it.

Shunsuke Arakawa explains the connection between sunlight, water, and the changing colors of leaves—why they are green and why they turn brown in winter.

Through his words, we come to appreciate the delicate balance of life in the mountains and our place within it.

By reflecting on the interconnectedness of life thriving in the mountains and forests, this adventure becomes more than just an activity—it transforms into a deeply memorable and educational experience.

There were also trees with intertwined trunks, full of vitality and strength.

As we near the summit, the night sky opens up, revealing a breathtaking starry expanse.

On the day of our trek, clouds partially covered the sky, but glimpses of stars shone through like a scene from a storybook.

At the summit, we take a break and enjoy warm miso soup in winter or refreshing drinks in summer.

If the weather is clear, participants can enjoy "light art" against the backdrop of the starry sky or the moon, create their initials, and capture unforgettable photos.
