After graduation, they all went their
separate ways, and have met up again
for the first time in a while.
Akiko, a native of Miyazaki, introduces
her friends from
Hong Kong, South Korea
and Taiwan to Miyazaki’s famous
sightseeing spots,
delicious food and
great activities like surfing,
scuba diving,
and a scenic drive along the coastal road.

Miyazaki’s coastline stretches 400km north to south, and is well-known throughout Japan for having a lot of great spots for surfing. The surf here is so good, the region has hosted world-class international surfing tournaments, and everyone from beginners to seasoned pros are bound to find the perfect spot. Another key draw is the easy access to the surfing spots from the airport.

Miyazaki is on the Pacific Ocean, and so it’s a great place to enjoy marine sports. The sea in the northern part of the prefecture, near the city of Nobeoka, has a lot of great diving spots where visitors can see all kinds of great things, even some that are rare in Japan, such as Flowery Plate Coral, as well as various types of hard and soft coral, colorful fish and underwater tunnels.

The Ebino Plateau is a an area of highland surrounded by beautiful natural scenery at a height of 1200m in the Kirishima mountain range in the west of Miyazaki prefecture. This popular spot is a favorite for Japanese and overseas tourists alike, that offers opportunities for full-on mountain climbing from the volcanic plateau, as well as some great hiking and trekking around the crater lakes. From Spring to Autumn, visitors can enjoy the beautiful and changing seasonal colors of the mountain foliage, and in winter the ice rink opens, making the plateau a great place to visit in any season.

The town of Takachiho is a mysterious place, held in Japanese Shinto mythology to be the birthplace of Japan. It is the home to several important sights, such as a UNESCO ecopark and land designated under the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System. Takachiho Gorge, formed around 100,000 years ago by volcanic activity in the area, is particularly famous. The Manai waterfall that cascades over the sheer rock face of the gorge was voted as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls, and can be seen either on foot from the hiking path, or from closer up by renting a boat.

Cape Toi is on the southern tip of Miyazaki Prefecture. On the very end of this headland, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, is a romantic-looking lighthouse. Cape Toi is also one of the only places in Japan where wild horses live – the horses there are descended from those ridden by the area’s Samurai long ago. It’s a very popular site for tourists, where you can relax surrounded by the beautiful blues and greens of the ocean and grassland, and watch the horses in their natural habitat.
